In just over a year since its launch, The Prem Rawat Foundation’s (TPRF) Food for People program in South Africa reached an extraordinary milestone. The program served its one millionth nutritious meal to children and families in need across the Cape Flats. This achievement is captured in a joyful new video shared by TPRF below.

From Hardship to Hope
Cape Flats, a sprawling region on the edge of Cape Town, has long faced socioeconomic hardship and food insecurity. Now, it is home to a vibrant hub of nourishment and hope. The program’s kitchen opened in late 2024 in Epping, a community bordering Cape Flats. From that fortuitous moment on, local staff have prepared and distributed meals to schools and community centers.
Incredibly, this milestone was reached within the first year of operation and is a tribute to generous donors from around the world.
These contributions have helped bring Prem Rawat’s vision for Food for People to life in the heart of a community in great need. The expansion of the program into South Africa followed successful results in India, Ghana and Nepal.
Currently, the overall total of nutritious meals served at all sites is over 8.5 million.
In the video released by TPRF, supporters see much more than the meals being prepared at the South African faciilty: they see the faces of the children whose lives are being touched, one bowl at a time.
More Than Food
Notably, the Food for People program offers more than food; it offers renewed opportunity. When children receive nutritious daily meals, they return to the classroom ready to learn, focus and grow. Families experience relief from the burden of daily hunger, gaining time and energy to pursue education, work and planning for the future. These positive ripple effects strengthen the entire community.
A defining feature of Food for People in Cape Flats is its deep connection to the community itself. The kitchen team is made up of local residents, some of whom have turned their lives around with the help of TPRF’s Peace Education Program. These local staff and volunteers now serve as leaders in preparing and delivering meals with care and dignity. TPRF’s collaboration with the local partner organization, PremUbuntu, helps ensure the food respects local culture and customs.
This holistic approach reinforces not only physical nourishment, but personal empowerment and pride.
The Power of Food to Transform Lives
Prem Rawat, founder of TPRF, emphasized at the program’s opening the profound difference that providing food can make. The Food for People program provides the possibility to break the cycle of poverty. By providing nutritious, locally tailored meals that restore dignity, health and hope to disadvantaged communities, they gain the power to create a positive future.
Reaching one million meals in Cape Flats is more than a numerical achievement. It is a celebration of community resilience, collective generosity and the profound difference that caring for basic human needs can make in creating a more hopeful tomorrow.
Food for People Program Global Impact
The one million meals milestone in Cape Flats also adds to a broader global impact. Since its inception in 2006, the Food for People program has made a remarkable difference in the communities it serves. It is improving health, boosting school attendance and fostering stronger economies in areas that face persistent challenges.
In addition to serving clean water and over 8.5 million nutritious meals, the program has expanded in India, Nepal and Ghana to include free classes for local residents in agriculture, computers, sewing and other practical skills.
With the continued support of donors in the years ahead, the program will also be able to evolve as local needs change in South Africa.
