TPRF Grant Provides Food for Ugandan Orphans

Orphanage childrenIn the wake of protracted fighting between rebels and government troops in the Rwenzori mountains, hundreds of displaced children still live on the streets of Kasese,

a town in western Uganda. A grant of $15,000 from The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF) will provide three nutritious meals each day for orphans aged 5 to 15 who have lost their parents to armed conflict or to HIV/AIDS.

Rwenzori Women’s Initiative for Community Development (RWICOD), recipient of the grant, works to improve the prospects of local orphans. The grant by TPRF will have a direct impact on the lives of children who have had to scavenge food from garbage bins and sleep in bushes or unfinished buildings, prey to the influence of criminal gangs.

Half of the total population of Uganda is under age 15, and life expectancy is just 53 years. There are an estimated 2.5 million Ugandan orphans, 50% of whom have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS. (UNICEF 2007)

TPRF’s president, Linda Pascotto, hopes that “three meals a day will provide nourishment and comfort for the orphans while RWICOD finds suitable homes for them and a chance for a new chapter in their lives."
